Product generalities:
Chemical Formula: Cl2
Chlorine is mainly used to make products with a long useful life such as Vinyl Chloride Monomer VCM (which is a raw material used in the production of PVC), Titanium Dioxide (raw material for white paints), cellulose bleaching in the pulp and paper industry, agrochemicals, water treatment and purification, and in the chemical industry in general. Chlorine is sold in the following presentations: 68 kg cylinders, 907 kg containers, 80 ton liquid-bulk rail cars.
Liquid chlorine is a transparent greenish-yellow, with a penetrating smell. It is a third as viscous as water. It evaporates rapidly when exposed to the atmosphere. The density of this liquid diminishes and its volume increases as temperature rises. Chlorine gas is two and a half times as dense as air, due to which it tends to accumulate in low places if it escapes into the atmosphere. Chlorine cylinders and containers must be stored in fresh, dry areas, in relative isolation and protected from the weather and sudden changes in temperature.
Chlorine must always be used on the storage principle “first in, first out”, since the valve liners might harden after prolonged storage, increasing the possibility of leakage.
